From the outside, The Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland is a little deceptive. The physical structure is almost dwarfed by the new Cleveland Browns Stadium, and a bit outclassed by the snazzy Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Inside, however, it always offers big fun.
A recent trip to see the traveling exhibit from England, Bodyworlds 2, was no exception. Seeing those plastinated bodies in various poses is astonishing. It also almost guarantees you'll find a new level of respect for medical professionals. Imagine dealing with the myriad systems inside our bodies, and having any degree of success...wow. Beyond Bodyworlds, the center had its old favorite displays (my son loves the hands-on, computerized music exhibits) there are a few new items...like, when did they add the cool virtual tour of the Grand Canyon...a virtual tour you take from a HANG Glider?? Wow. My daughter loved that. You know what I really loved? We got downtown as the Browns game was ending, and we had no trouble parking; the Indians game was drawing a crowd as we left, so we faced very little traffic on our way out. Timing really is everything... Still, sometimes a small-town festival is ideal. That's what we found in Kent's annual "Art in the Park" weekend. Boy, has it grown. The two-day shindig celebrates local artists, but now "local" includes many from all over Ohio. We thoroughly enjoyed Rott Iron demonstrations from Cincinnati, courtesy or Darryl Dieckman's Rott Iron Works as well as "strolling poet" Meryl Mollenkopf, KSU's own 'Flash in the Pan" steel drum band, and more.
So you missed Bodyworlds 2? Don't fret. The Science Museum is worth the price of admission, every day...and it IS open every day (excluding Christmas and New Year's, that is) from 9 am - 5:30 pm.
