High Flying Fun

The Blue Angels roar by at Stow's Aviation Days.
We Ohioans are proud of our aviation history. So proud that our collective feelings were hurt (and Representative Dennis Kucinich nearly had a fit) when we didn't win our bid to be home to the new NASA facility. And yes, it sure would have been nice to add 500 highly-skilled (albiet mostly administrative) jobs to our dwindling base. But, rather than dwelling on all that, why not celebrate with an air show? Ah, now that's the spirit! What's coming up:

Blue Ash Airport Days - near Cincinnati - June 11- 12
Hot Air Balloons at an airshow make perfect sense to me, but why combine a 5K (foot) race with the event? Oh, who cares? Lace up your fastest running shoes and high-tail it to this air show. This year's scoop: See the "Firebirds Team" flying dual synchronized aerobatics. Pssst...the show is still in need of volunteers. They get in free, you know. Find out more at: http://www.airportdays.com/news/voluntee...

Behind the Scenes at Wright Patterson - Dayton - Friday, June 3
"Behind-the-scenes" tours are highly rated by first-time visitors to Ohio's friendly Air Force Base and by frequent fliers alike. Find out more about the tour (reservations are required) at: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/

Aero Expo 2005 - in Akron - June 17 -18
See the cool "jet car" and a host of current military planes and 'copters as well as slew of vintage birds. Rides are available on a variety of crafts. Find out more at:

Cleveland International Air Show - Burke Lakefront Airport - Sept. 4 - 6
Can you hear me now? No, not during this roaring event. Draws a huge crowd--and usually disrupts the Indians baseball game, at least when the fighter jets buzz by. But not this year. The FAA OK'd the Blue Angels to do their thing since the Indians will be out of town that weekend, and if the Browns play, it will be a "non-conflicting" pre-season game. Find out more about the show at: http://www.clevelandairshow.com/

Other shows are coming up this summer (and a few in early fall) in Toledo, Columbus, and around the state. Plus, there are nearly a dozen hot air balloon festivals--in Coshocton, Wooster, and other parts. If I missed your favorite Ohio air show, speak up! Please start a discussion to fill us all in on the details.

Here's to a summer of clear skies! ~ Diane
