Beat the Winter Blahs

So, you say you stocked up on hot chocolate and fuzzy slippers just for this occasion? (And by 'this occasion,' I mean a string of days with temps in the single digits and the sun perched much too far from our axis.) If human nature makes us crave creature comforts like warm cookies and movies on TiVo, well, giving in once in a while is fine...until spring arrives, and we find it's hard to hide those extra lumpy pounds under our bathing suits. What's a cold-weather climate dweller to do? Below, I've gathered a few suggestions-and don't worry, none of them involve pumping iron. Just be aware, these activities are good for your facial muscles-you'll probably have a lot of fun and do some serious aerobic smiling! If you've got other spots to recommend to get us through the winter blahs, please post a comment or start a discussion. Cheers ~ Diane

If You Think It's Cold Now... Visit the West Woods Nature Center 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) in Russell Township. On Saturday, January 22 at 7:30 pm, a special program, "Those Magnificent Monsters of the Ice Age" will be delivered by Robert Glotzhober, Curator of Natural History, The Ohio Historical Society. That night, you'll get an introduction to the giant animals that made Ohio their home after the Ice Age. The fabulous displays remain through Feb. 27. Call (440) 286-9516 for reservations or learn more online at http://www.co.geauga.oh.us/events.htm

Even if you don't catch the program, I suggest that you visit the park and enjoy a great (rather short) hike to Ansel's Cave.

From Wild Animals of Yesterday to Wild Animals of Today... If glimpsing into the Ice Age made you wonder what the polar bears and sloths (and other survivors) are doing these days, visit a zoo. The Cleveland, Akron, and Cincinnati zoos are all open year 'round. (And if cold weather makes you think of penguins, think again--did you know all 18 varieties of the flightless birds live in the SOUTHERN hemisphere?? I didn't, either.) Visit Ohio's zoos online at:
Cleveland Zoo: http://www.clevelandzoo.org
Akron Zoo: http://www.akronzoo.org
Cincinnati Zoo: http://www.cincinnatizoo.org
If you're warm-blooded, you're in luck--you can go ice skating at the Safari rink inside the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens. (And as long as you're in Cinci, cruise across the river to Newport, KY to visit the Newport Aquarium--open 365 days a year, 10am -6 pm, where you'll see sharks and other ocean creatures--which may, or may not, make cure your ache to go snorkeling...Check it out online: http://www.newportaquarium.com/visit/ or call: 859-261-7444) If you're not exactly as well insulated as a polar bear, don't despair. Visit the Cleveland Zoo's nice, toasty rainforest. Ahhhhh...it's kind of like walking around in a big, educational sauna.
