That darned Groundhog. Every year, I think, "Who's he kidding? If only we could count on spring to show up a mere six weeks after that little rat sees his shadow!"
OK, now that I've established that I'm my usual impatient self about spring's arrival, what do I suggest can be done about it? As luck would have it, I do have a couple of ideas. I know of no better place to fake spring's early arrival than at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus. There you'll find acres of humid, indoor greenery, from delicate orchids to dessert grasses. And my favorite part...the ants! I could spend hours watching the colony of Leaf-cutting Ants doing their thing, if only my family would let me. ("You didn't even LIKE the ants that got in OUR house, Mom," my 7-year-old reminded me on our last visit. Fair enough.) What's that? Ants with jaws of steel don't excite you? Well, that's OK--there are still plenty of reasons to fall in love with the conservancy. Visit now through September 6 and enjoy the 10th annual Butterflies & Blooms exibit. Find out more about the park, its history and lovely grounds at http://www.fpconservatory.org/ The second place I suggest to "hurry spring" is a waterpark. An INDOOR waterpark. Great Bear Lodge in Sandusky likes to advertise that it is Ohio's ONLY Indoor Waterpark and well, that it is. Exclusivity typically means expensive...and that it is, too. But there's good news, too. The good news is the fun, family-friendly lodge is but a tank away from almost any part of Ohio, and some GREAT DISCOUNTS are available at http://www.greatbearlodge.com/specials.a... right now. In my opinion, it's still a bit over-priced. But hey, who can put a value on a taste of spring? And lest I be called to the carpet for selling the place short, I should mention that the lodge is more than "just" a waterpark. It features daily storytimes and other staffed activities for kids of all ages, from Karaoke to Oragami, so guests can dry out and have fun between runs on the waterslides. so put the price out of your mind, and think of it as a family vacation to a warm and splashy place--sans plane fare. Where do you like to go, and what do you like to do, to hurry spring's arrival? Start a discussion here and let us know! Go To Page: 1
