I love Summer and everything (except mosquitoes and black flies) that goes with it. One of my favorite summertime activities is finding fun, funky festivals that celebrate an almost unbelievable range of things. For example...
Have you ever been to the Pork Rind Festival? Yes, I said "Pork Rind" Festival. Held each June in Harrod (near Lima), the event pays tribute to the snack food we all love to criticize. And perhaps it's time to give the old pork rind some respect. Why, did you know that Rudolph Food's Pork Rinds contain no artificial flavors or preservatives? (You probably already guessed that Rudolf Foods sponsors the festival.) Pork rinds are 70% proteins--unlike potato and corn chips that are mostly carbohydrates--and a one-ounce serving of pork rinds contains 80 calories, 9 grams of protein, and 5 grams of fat. The same portion of peanuts also contains 80 calories, but has less protein (4 grams) and more fat (7 grams) than the pork rinds. The moral? You've got to be a nut not to love pork rinds. The 2003 Pork Rind Festival runs June 13-14 and features free entertainment, bed races, booths selling pork rinds and cracklins (of course!) and plenty other fun stuff. Kickoff: Friday at 6:00 PM. A parade will be held through downtown Harrod at 11:00 AM Saturday. The local bicycle club offers a bike ride in conjunction with the festival. See details at http://www.limaroadrunners.com/ Find out more about the Pork Rind Festival online at http://www.rudolphfoods.com/pork_rind_he... or call 419-648-5091 Two other dandy summertime festivals are the Troy Strawberry Festival, scheduled for June 8 this year, and the Great Mohican Indian Pow-Wow (in Loudonville) to be held July 11-13 this year. At the Pow-Wow, Native American artisans display their pottery, bead work, knife making, silver, antler, and quill works, fur trading and storytelling skills, and more. Call 800-766-2267 for information. Looking for a Good Time? Even if pork rinds, pow-wows and strawberries aren't your kind of fun, you can find a festival to tickle your fancy this summer. Ohio celebrates ribs, balloons, tomatoes, and dozens of other things every summer. The Ohio Public Library Information Network, or OPLIN, offers a great list of Ohio's summertime festivals, sorted by month. The link: http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/index.cfm?ID=... Of course, you can always go to http://www.ohiotourism.com/calendar/ to see what's happening when in the Buckeye state. Speaking of buckeyes, it seems like there ought to be a Buckeye Festival in Ohio. I found that there are actually several, sort of. There's the Buckeye Tree Festival, sponsored by Velvet Ice Cream (in Newark) each September. (See http://www.velvet-icecream.com/buckeye.h... for more information.) Then there's the Buckeye Ranch Film Festival, a benefit for the Buckeye Ranch for families organization in Grove City. (Go to http://www.buckeyeranchfilmfest.org/ for details.) I also found a Canada Buckeye Festival, but it (obviously) isn't held here in Ohio. Go To Page: 1 2
