It didn't seem too hot as we began our travels. Since there was a pull-out bed in the back of the van, we rarely stopped on our way to the border. We were so excited that we just switched driving positions and napped while the other one drove. The van ran beautifully, even in the mountainous Big Sur area.
We visited a few cities along the way, but managed to make Tiajuana on our third day out. Quickly driving through throngs of people in Tiajuana, we continued on south with a side trip to a beautiful vineyard. Stopping for the night to camp at the first beach we found, we celebrated with the wine we purchased at the vineyards and made plans for the next morning. We decided to eat lunch in Encenada and drove through the bustling city. A cruise ship was debarking; so there were numerous tourists in the area. We parked two streets from the main tourist avenue and went off for lunch. I had a terrible feeling during lunch, and asked Randy if he would mind checking on the van while we were waiting for our food. A little uneasy himself, he set off on his security mission and returned 10 minutes later. Everything was fine. We were particularly worried about our bikes that were locked on top of the van, but they were still there. We leisurely ate our lunch and decided to continue on. Walking to where I thought we'd parked, I was surprised that I must have misread the street sign, because our van was not where I thought it was. Oh well, we must have parked on the next street. My husband, his face ashen, didn't think so. We frantically searched the surrounding streets and wound up back where we thought the original parking place was, and looked down to a pile of glass. I've never had such a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. The van had everything in it! I had even left cash, and an extra credit card in case my purse was stolen, never thinking the van would disappear. Looking around, we noticed that there were some interestingly dressed women in front of the building. We had parked in front of a brothel! Luckily a man with a cell phone came out and told us that our van had been towed a police car. We asked whether he would call the police for us, and he happily did so. Go To Page: 1 2
