Some children with OCD also have ADD or ADHD. And some children with ADD or ADHD also have OCD. So it is suitable to share with you a delightful discovery I recently made. Two authors, Phyllis Carpenter and Marti Ford, a teacher and a parent of a child with ADD, coauthored Sparky's Excellent Misadventures : My A.D.D. Journal.
Published by Magination Press, Sparky's Excellent Misadventures is written as a child would write in a journal. Sparky relates his experience of getting into trouble a lot when he doesn't mean to. He just has difficulty keeping still and quiet. The reader sees a good little boy who just happens to have a problem. He goes to the doctor and finds out his problem is called ADD.
The doctor gives Sparky some pills which helps. The reader also sees Sparky's parents and teacher help him in other ways. It is so exciting to see a happy little boy emerging. He's happy because now he can sit still and he can stay out of trouble.
I am hoping this little book will encourage children to keep a journal. Whatever the problem, journaling can help us all relate our feelings and see more clearly our progress as we struggle with our problems. In the book, Sparky's grandmother gives him a journal and a shiny red pencil. I hope this books motivates thousands of parents and teachers to give a child a journal - and a shiny red pencil.
Congratulations to Phyllis Carpenter and Marti Ford on a job well done.
