Readers have been asking about printed resources on OCD. There are quite a few books from which to choose. This fall New Harbinger Publications will release "The OCD Workbook." I coauthored it with Bruce Hyman, Ph.D. so I am a bit partial to it. "The OCD Workbook" will take readers, step-by-step through Dr. Hyman's Self-Directed Program for breaking free from OCD.

Other self-help books teach readers how to apply cognitive behavior therapy strategies to their OCD problem. My favorites are:

Baer, Lee. 1992. Getting Control: Overcoming Your Obsessions and Compulsions New York: Plume.

Foa, Edna B. and Wilson, Reid. 1991. Stop Obsessing! How to Overcome Your Obsessions and Compulsions. New York: Bantam Books.

Schwartz, Jeffrey with Beyette, Beverly. 1996. Brain Lock, Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior. New York: ReganBooks.

The books above offer a program with specific advice for overcoming OCD. Other books give general information about OCD and will greatly improve your understanding of the disorder. My favorites in this area are:

Steketee, Gail and White, Kerin. 1990. When Once is Not Enough, Help for Obsessive Compulsives. Oakland, CA: New Harbinger Publications, Inc.

Osborn, Ian. 1998. Tormenting Thoughts and Secret Rituals, The Hidden Epidemic of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. New York: Pantheon Books.

Dumont, Raeann.1996. The Sky is Falling, Understanding and Coping with Phobias, Panic, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders. New York: W.W. Norton.

Greist, John H. 1995. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Guide. Madison, WI: Dean Foundation for Health, Research and Education.

VanNoppen, Barbara L, Pato, Michele Tortora and Rasmussen, Steven. 1993. Learning to Live with OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Third Edition. Milford CT: Obsessive Compulsive Foundation.

de Silva, Padmal and Rachman, Stanley. 1998. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, the Facts, Second Edition. New York: Oxford University Press.

Rapoport, Judith L. 1989. The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing, The Experience and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. New York: E. P. Dutton.

Neziroglu, Fugen and Yaryura-Tobias, Jose A. 1995. Over and Over Again, Understanding Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. New York: Lexington Books.

And then there are books that focus on a specific aspect of dealing with OCD - scrupulosity, family support, OCD and parenting, support groups. My favorites:

Ciarrocchi, Joseph W. 1995. The Doubting Disease. Help for Scrupulosity and Religious Compulsions. Mahwah, NJ: Paulist Press.

C., Roy. 1990. Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous, Recovering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. New Hyde Park, NY: Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous, Inc.

C., Roy. 1993. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, A Survival Guide for Family and Friends. New Hyde Park, NY: Obsessive Compulsive Anonymous, Inc.

Gravitz, Herbert L. 1998. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, New Help for the Family. Santa Barbara, CA: Healing Visions Press.
