The 1999 Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation Conference will be held in Arlington, Virginia July 9-11 at the Crystal Gateway Marriot. Visit the OCF's special conference web page for extensive information at http://www.ocfoundation.org/ocf1121a.htm

This year's conference is designed to provide attendees with the most current information on research, resources and recovery concerning obsessive-compulsive disorder and its related spectrum disorders. Over 600 people are expected to attend and will include people with OCD, their family members and friends, and mental health professionals.

Thirty-nine workshops will be offered. Saturday's keynote session will feature one of the best and nicest OCD experts in the world, Michael Jenike, MD. He will moderate a panel discussion that will include Mike Wallace, Art Buchwald and William Styron. They will focus on overcoming the stigma of mental illness.

The biggest problem we will have is deciding which sessions to go to. Several are offered during each time slot. Most will be taped, so we can purchase tapes of the sessions we miss. I can't list all the subjects, but here are a few:

Trichotillomania (hair pulling)

Rational emotive therapy for OCD

Legislative advocacy

Job interviewing

OCD help on the Internet

Support groups

The latest in OCD treatment

Children with OCD

Scrupulosity

Nuts and Bolts of ERP

"Hit and Run" OCD

Body dysmorphic disorder

Living with your loved one's OCD

Pathological gambling

Panic and OCD

12-Step healing and spirituality

Hoarding

Mindfulness

Outpatient behavior therapy

Multi-cultural issues

Stigma elimination

Neurobiology of OCD

Hypochondriasis

You are probably wondering about the topic, "Hit and Run OCD." People with this type of OCD suffer from an obsessive preoccupation with the possibility of having harmed someone while driving. As a result, driving becomes a nightmare of constant checking and worry about having caused harm. Bruce Hyman, Ph.D has specialized in Hit and Run OCD and will present cognitive-behavioral strategies for breaking free from this type of OCD.

Bruce Hyman is the coauthor of The OCD Workbook, Your Guide to Breaking Free From Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. One of the chapters focuses on Hit and Run OCD. And who is the other coauthor of The OCD Workbook? None other than your Suite101 contributing editor, Cherry Pedrick, RN! Publication time is nearing. Our workbook will be published in the fall by New Harbinger Publications.

Have I tempted you to attend the OCF Conference? The learning opportunities are tremendous, but there's more. The Crystal Gateway Marriot is located in a complex that contains numerous retail shops and restaurants. And the Metro system will easily connect you to the major tourist attractions of the Washington, D.C. area, including the White House, Washington Monument, Smithsonian Museum, Holocaust Museum and the Vietnam Memorial. And don't forget the lobbying effort on Friday, July 9. See my Suite101 article, Obsessive-Compulsive Foundation Sponsors Lobbying Effort.
