"Papa's Home Coming"

This is the final article in the series of Papa's cancer fight, surgery and home coming to continue his recovery.

Sarah's sixth birthday was December 28th, and as a special gift her Papa was able to come home from the hospital. Sarah was so excited her Papa was home. Papa stayed in the hospital day and night for 25 days. In Sarah's world it was a very, very long time. When Papa called her to wish her a Happy Birthday, her first question was "where are you?" Papa said "at home, Baby, at home!" Sarah asked "how did you get home?" Papa replied "A guardian angel, my friend Kent, borrowed a four wheel drive truck. He drove through the snow storm and picked Grammie and me up from the hospital."

"Grammie stayed at the hospital with me for a few days, there was too much snow for her to go home and come back everyday." "Grammie took cups outside and filled them with snow, she put candy canes in the snow cups and gave them to the other patients on my floor, she sang White Christmas as she handed the unexpected snow cups to the patients." Papa told Sarah he never saw so much snow. Sarah agreed, the snow was higher than her head.

The metro Buffalo area received a record snow fall of almost 7 feet. At our house in the North Towns we had over 5 feet. Our neighbors had shoveled and plowed our driveway and sidewalk. The ride home from the hospital was awesome - for a 5 mile stretch we could not see the car in front of us or the houses on either side of the road. We knew we were in safe hands with Kent driving, a normally 30 minute drive took almost 2 hours, we arrived safe at home with just a few flurries coming down.

Papa was so glad to finally reach our house, after a long climb up the stairs he settled into his favorite chair and rested comfortably. I let him rest for a long while, a made out his medicatin and feeding schedule. We cuddled for awhile and I sang "Let It Snow", a very appropriate song for the weather and our blessings of being home together.

Sarah will finally get to see her Papa New Years Eve, and we will start the New Year off together. Sarah will help me take good care of Rick, and she will entertain him in the way she knows will warm his heart and lift his spirits.
