I bet if you sat down with your grandchild, each one of you make a list of favorite things to do indoors. Then compared the lists, you will find a few activities that you could do together. There may be things on your grandchild's list you never thought of trying, but now have the opportunity. Your grandchild may like someting on your list and would love for you to teach them the new activity.
GRAMMIE'S LIST may have jigsaw puzzles, painting wooden garden ornaments, playing cards - war or rummy, playing checkers, dominoes, or parchesi, stenciling a wall, planting bulbs indoors, planning and ordering plants for the gardens, baking desserts, scrapbooking, writing, reading, reorganizing bear and doll collections, surfing the Internet for nature sites, especially wolf habitats, take a bubble bath, watch movies, crocheted blanket and make baby clothes. SARAH'S LIST may have coloring, playing with dolls, rearrange Barbie and Kelly collections, play dominoes or candy land, bake cookies, make pizza, paint wooden hearts, make bead bracelets or keyrings, do a puzzle, play dressup, have a tea party, build a house of sticks or cards, play learning and adventure games on the PC, brush the dogs, put nail polish on, read, swim in the tub, clean the house, teach Sam {Grammie's Parrot} a new trick, make Mom a birthday present, play checkers, sing songs, take pictures of pets, watch movies.
Now compare your lists and make a list of things to do together. GRAND LIST may have play cards, dominoes, or checkers, bake desserts or pizza, reorganize doll collection, read, work on craft projects, do a jigsaw puzzle, take a bubble bath, pamper pets, pamper each other. The things that are not included in the GRAND LIST are basically activities each can do on their own, for their own private play or rest time. It's great to do things together, but remember that every person needs some alone time to what they want, to do what they need to do to pamper themselves.
During the winter months, plan to do some indoor activities outside the home. Visit a museum, book store, library, sporting event, movie matinee, church social, window shop at the mall, local animal shelters, craft fairs, dog show, cat show, antique shops, and even home shows or open houses. There are many places to visit, look in your local newspaper under family entertainment for ideas. Contact your local chamber of commerse or visitor's bureau for a listing of events.
