www.byte.com is really at CMP.net now! How corporate-looking.
(Sorry, I'll never get used to these mergers and buyouts) As a former long-time subscriber to Byte magazine, I'd like to point anyone interested in CMP's most recent acquisition (or rather, the effects thereof) to www.jerrypournelle.com (aka Chaos Manor), where Pournelle is hosting a sort of "update page" called The Byte Fiasco. Housekeeping It seems the NT forums (not newsgroups) I list in the Links section here are constantly changing... I've double-checked and re-updated them all again (and if any are in your bookmarks, you might care to do the same). . . . And ZDNet is constantly undergoing changes in their site structure, as well. I loved their OS User - Windows NT page, as it [purported to] contain all NT-related content across all the ZDNet publications. However, while the link itself is still valid, there is no longer really an NT section of OS User (oh, it's there, but it just lists the major reviews of NT, not all the news and opinion pieces). Fortunately, after some digging, I found an NT page buried in the PC Magazine site, curiously called an "NT Solution Pack", which, with any luck, will remain vaild longer than a week. This "NT Solution Pack" lists all NT-related Tips from PC Magazine's PC Tech section; related articles from past issues of PC Magazine; an NT Utilities Software Library (with about 10 shareware or freeware items listed therein); and links to other NT-related content at ZDNet. So I'm replacing the OS User link with this Solution Pack link. Another Cache and Cookie Cleaner If you read Managing the IE4 Cache and Managing IE4 Cookies, where I reviewed some software that handles "internet clutter" (cache and cookies) and takes care of Internet Explorer's index.dat files problem, you'll be interested to know that there is a new option available besides TweakIE for Windows 95 (which is vaporware on the NT platform anyway) and the rather expensive privacy software, IEClean 32. Webroot Software is offering a slimmed-down version of their "Window Washer" program, Cache and Cookie Washer for Internet Explorer, for about $15, which now handles IE's index.dat files problem and allows you to select individual cookies to keep. Unlike the other reviewed software, Washer IE lets you schedule the service the run automatically at certain intervals. (Note that the $30 Window Washer program includes the same functionality, plus cleans Netscape, ICQ, and regular Windows clutter (like temp files, Documents list, etc)
