UPDATE: New Online

New FAT32 Driver for NT

NT Internals just released a read-only version of a FAT32 driver for NT. Watch their site for news of the read/write version going on sale soon.

New NT Configuration Utility (freeware)!

Configuration Wizard NT is like a "Tweak UI for NT", except it handles the NT-specific "secret" Registry settings you've read about (eg: Logon topics like "AutoLogon"; Security issues like "Clear Pagefile at Shutdown", and restricting net access to the Registry; File System options like "Disable 8.3 Name Creation"; and so forth) instead of icons on your desktop and whatnot. The small (229K download) freeware utility requires no installation (just put the executable in a directory on your path). Must see!

Should IE4 be a part of Windows?

PC Magazine's new PC Tech column, So What's an Operating System, Anyway?, by Neil Randall, is generating some good discussion. (Note: it will be published in the 5/5/98 issue of PC Magazine).

Note that there are 5 pages to the entire article, plus two figures, all accessible from the sidebar. The fourth page, Internet Explorer 4.0, is a particularly informative section dealing with exactly how IE4 is (and will be) integrated into the OS.

Top 5 Site Improvement

Last month, Windows NT Magazine added a new section to their site called Web Exclusives, which includes Book Reviews, Lab Reports of various products, and so forth. Since it's so new, all the articles so far are on the main Web Exclusives page, separated by month, then article type.

One of this month's Lab Reports reviews Norton Uninstall Deluxe on Windows NT, which I also looked at some time ago in Cleaning Up Orphan Files. The author actually tested Uninstall by trying to install, then completely remove, Internet Explorer 4!

Top 5 Site URL Change

Savilltech's NT FAQ is now located at www.ntfaq.com.

New NT Web Forum

MyDesktop Network has expanded yet again (read a review of this site in Two Sites Reviewed)! Their new Virtual Doctor site includes forums for many platforms including Windows 95, Windows NT, OS/2, and Unix.

If the Virtual Doctor NT forum continues to look this busy, I'll add it to the ever-growing list of "Web Forums and Newsgroups" links here at Suite101.com (and to think we used to have to search out these forums!).

Like to read TIPS?

I'm not sure what "RESA II" is, but they went hot last September, and they maintain this excellent TIPS page with links to one gigantic Windows NT 4.0 page, a growing Internet Explorer 4.0 page, WinWord and Office 97 pages, Notes tips, and many more hardware and software computer topics.
