UPDATE: IE4's "New Window" Bug

Last month, I detailed a nagging little IE4 bug that affects Windows 95 and Windows NT users. There was a Knowledge Base article available, complete with a solution, but it was for Windows 95 installations only.

Web Response

With the help of Microsoft's Web Response, the "NT version" of the bug (?) was determined to be with OLE Automation. It is still unknown what exactly causes the problem, but basically some few Registry entries get messed up, and the self-registering library file oleaut32.dll won't register correctly, even during an IE4 reinstall (ie, it reports an error when trying to register itself).

The Solution

The solution comes from a German IE4 web site, Conactive's IE Center, which [under "Probleme", English-edition] lists a handful of solutions for both Windows NT and Windows 95, with the two relevant NT solutions at the top of the list. The first solution is a REG file with the correct Registry entries (detailed below); and the second solution is a reinstallation of the OLE Automation files (available for download at the site).

Keep an eye out at Microsoft's Support Online for an article detailing the problem in full. We hope!

The Registry Entries

HCR\CLSID\{00020424-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} \InprocServer32 \<noname>=oleaut32.dll

HCR\CLSID\{00020424-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} \InprocServer32 \ThreadingModel=both

...Later This Week

The Tuesday, 24 March article is Recovering NT (ie, after a boot failure). It was inspired by NT Internals' new ERD Commander utility.
