Due to personal circumstances, I am forced to take a hiatus from editing this column for the next few weeks. However, for the time being, please explore the following "mega-Windows-sites" with NT information threaded throughout:
Frank Condron's World of Windows Condron's www.worldowindows.com is probably best known for its list of drivers for Windows platforms, and is listed in PC Computing's Undocumented Internet Secrets article. From his Company/Driver Information page, you select a manufacturer's name, and you'll go to that company's page, where you'll find extensive details about the drivers available for each Microsoft platform for each product the company manufacturers. However, the shining star at this site is his Service Pack Information page that lists hotfixes by release date, the order in which you're supposed to install them. Furthermore, his Microsoft web site Resources page has direct links to various pages of interest at Microsoft. Finally, his NT Performance Tuning page is coming along nicely (it's not finished yet, but what's there so far is very good). My Desktop Network My Desktop Network has a Tip Index of "over 1500 32-bit tips", which includes a Windows NT Tips page. There are 13 subsections of NT tips, including topics like Registry, Explorer, Memory, and Optimization. The NT tips number few, and are generally well-known, but they're organized well and explained in nice detail (here you go, beginners!). Actually, what I like best about My Desktop Network is its "Features" articles at WindowsCentral.com. There's more for Windows 95 here, for sure, but the quality of the NT articles are good, plus they have a spread on Windows NT 5.0 beta. Be sure to scroll down the index page of Features for articles such as "Inside the NT File System". I like My Desktop Network overall, although I find its overall organization confusing. Its main page is a potpourri of articles from throughout the site, but the site includes radically different themes: Windows Central, oZone Games, and Beta Planet. Windows Central alone is massive, including a news section, software reviews, and both the Feature Articles and Tips sections discussed above. Definitely worth some time exploring, however.
