NT Tips

Only a few sites I know of stand out for their "NT tips", which I generally consider to be little helpful tidbits of information which won't generally fit into an "article", and would only make a "FAQ" more cumbersome than needed (a "FAQ", after all, is frequently asked questions -- a "tip" isn't usually something that's frequently asked, although it stands to make your computing experience easier or better).

3 Great Tips Sites

JSI, Inc.'s NT Tips, Registry Hacks, and more... page is THE site for Windows NT tips, covering mainly the lesser known hacks. It's the closest thing to "comprehensive" I know of. The tips are ordered by date, and Jerold Schulman (the JS of "JSI") adds to them almost daily. There are about 300 top-notch tips here to date, and he's recently added a nice search function at the top of the page.

However, don't just search for a needed tip here: read the tips one by one, or you'll miss some excellent information. There are divider lines between each set of tips, and each set has its own web page, so you can easily select the first tip in a set, then read the whole section of tips without having to bounce back to the index.

After recommending this site on my own NT page, I got an email complaining that this site was too advanced! Some of the tips here do seem rather advanced, I guess (I always thought that was a good thing!), but the first tip is "How to edit the Windows NT Registry", and the hacks are both useful and responsible (that is, they won't bring your system crashing to its knees).

George Roettger's Windows NT Tips generally go beyond what is found at other sites (for example, see the "Misc" section at the bottom of his tips index page, which contains things such as a PC's beep codes).

The Tips and Traps monthly column of Windows NT Magazine is great reading. However, the Powers That Be don't publish the tips (or any articles) on the web until a few months after paper publication, so if you want the current month's tips, you have to buy the magazine. (The old tips are certainly worth your perusal, however -- be sure to scroll down to "Columns" after selecting a monthly issue to find the "Tips and Traps" column).

Windows NT Magazine also has a weekly web newsletter, Update, with an occasional newly discovered tip. UPDATE can be mailed to you every Monday, or you can view the previous issues at Windows NT Magazine UPDATE (this is a framed site, so you have to select "Previous Issues", then select an issue date, manually).
