nt.zdnet.com officially launches this week, hand-in-hand with ZD's new Windows Pro magazine (the one that's replacing Windows Sources).

While there are a few new resources here, most especially including Russ Cooper's NT Security section, mainly you'll find links to other ZD publications' resources (such as columns and downloads).

Fresh? No - REGURGITATED!

While this site looks extremely huge, and indeed it's referred to as a "supersite," most of it consists of links to previously featured (read: old) articles from ZD Help (the "tips" supersite, which recycles tips from old articles as well), and the various ZD magazines' sites.

In particular, while the NT@Work, Tech Support, NT Workstation, and NT Server pages each provide nice-sounding sub-topics (like "Administration" under NT@Work; or "Registry" under Tech Support), the sub-topics merely provide links to old ZDNet content, some of which includes paragraph-long "beginner tips" found at ZD Help (while others are full-length somewhat technical articles from premiere ZD magazines).

You're probably going to end up using ZDNet's Search function more than these topic/sub-topic pages.

News

With NT News, they finally got it right! In previous incarnations from ZDNet ("ntnews.com" in particular, which is no longer a ZDNet domain name), they'd stick up a few hopelessly outdated columns from their print magazines, and maybe a link to ZDNN. However, this time they are filtering ZDNN for NT-related news clips, and it looks pretty good!

On the other hand, and don't be misled, if you select "NT News from ZDNN" instead of the main "NT News" link, you'll end up with the horrible "ZDNet Search" results on "windows" and "nt" in the last month on ZDNN sorted by relevance instead of date!

If you're interested in NT beta news (and rumors/innuendos), bookmark Stephan98.com.

Downloads

The NT Downloads page basically just links to ZDNet's Hotfiles sections, although the Patches and Fixes section lists Microsoft links.

Yes: no actual downloads, as the title might suggest, just links to these patches. Worse yet, there's no indication of which fixes one must apply - simply a link to the Microsoft text document telling you the order in which to apply the fixes. (For more information about applying Microsoft fixes, cf the July 21st What's New, and How to Navigate It)

I don't like this section of nt.zdnet because it organizes ZDNet's Hotfiles into categories like "NT Toolkit" without including many important tools that aren't available from ZDNet! And I have to question some of the "Top Utilites" features, as well.
