the genre of novel you’re writing, and ask them to give you an honest opinion. Just be prepared for bad news. My mentor often tells me that what I’m doing won’t work. That’s her job, and I take it as it’s intended—constructive criticism. Then I move on with the next thing.

Simple, but not easy, making sure your idea works as a plot. But once you’ve located and tested an idea, you’re well on your way to a novel. And that, after all, is what it’s all about.
