After some short speeches, the parade dissolved and we went home for a quick lunch, then back out to watch the adult parade with more bands, banners from the different clubs and companies and organizations.

In the afternoon, more races and contests took place – boat races, games for the little ones, horse races, and of course, all kinds of food - pop, hotdogs, ice cream, candy. Everybody wandered around meeting friends, talking, and laughing.

In the evening, as soon as it started to get dark, another band showed up and dancing started at the market place. It was very safe and fun. The dancing kept on til midnight, when a huge firework display ended the day. “Hurra, Hurra, Hurra!” It was exciting and so fun – the best day of the year.

“It was nice of everybody to come out and celebrate my birthday,” my Dad always said with a wink and a happy grin. It is a day I always fondly remember as a little girl and young teenager growing up in Norway.
