Last week we presented the Norwegian women Olympians of the 2002 Winter Games. Norwegian men had an excellent performance to match. Here are some of the men’s champions below.

The Men
Kjetil Andre Aamodt: Winner of gold medals for the Men’s Combined portion of the Alpine skiing competition and the Men’s Super-G, Aamodt (originally from Oslo) has now won the most medals for alpine skiing (6) in the history of the Olympics. Aamodt currently lives in Monaco. With a total of 15 world and Olympic medals, Aamodt holds the men’s record for athletic decoration.

Lasse Kjus: Now that Kjus has won the downhill silver medal and the bronze in the giant slalom competition, he (along with Marc Girardelli) comes in 2nd to Aamodt’s record with a total of 13 world and Olympic medals. Born in 1971, he lives in Oslo, the city of his birth.

Frode Andresen: Originally from the Netherlands, Andresen moved to Norway at age four, already well traveled in Europe and Africa. Andresen, who won the gold in the Men’s Biathlon Relay, along with teammates Bjoerndalen, Gjelland, and Hanevold, resides in Klekken, Norway.

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen: Born in Drammen, Bjoerndalen currently lives in Trondheim. Bjoerndalen celebrated a successful year, winning gold medals in the Sprint, Pursuit, Individual, and Relay portions of the Biathlon competition. His success is due in part, perhaps, to his mental trainer, a vacuum salesman who once managed to sell him an apparatus at $3500.

Egil Gjelland: A member of the gold-winning biathlon relay team, Gjelland is engaged to Ann-Elen Skjelbreid (silver-medal relayist in the biathlon and sister of Liv Grete Poiree). Born in Voss in 1973, Gjelland works as a carpenter during the rest of the year in Eikelandsosen, Norway.

Halvard Hanevold: Another golden member of the biathlon relay team, Hanevold was born in Askim in 1969. Hanevold studies civil engineering and economics in Trondheim, where he lives with wife Evelyn, a biathlete who participated in the Europa Cup.

Thomas Alsgaard: Part of the gold-winning cross-country relay team and tied with Frode Estil for the Silver medal in the men’s cross-country 10 km free pursuit, Alsgaard lives in Nannestad Norway. Born in Loerenskog in 1972, Alsgaard won his first racing competition when he was three years old. His cross-country website is at http://www.langrenn.com .

Frode Estil: Tied with Alsgaard for the silver in the 10km pursuit, Estil also won the silver in the 15km classical competition and the gold in the cross-country relay with teammates Alsgaard, Skjeldal, and Aukland. Five days out of the year, he serves as a member of what could be called Norway’s National Guard.
