The way they are forced has become more innovative too. Someone figured out that you could plant the bulbs in gravel (as we have been doing for years) in the
bottom of a tall translucent vase or hurricane globe and the leaves will be supported by the sides of the vase without the appearance of being staked. Just put about three inches of gravel in the bottom, plant the bulb (or bulbs depending on the size of the vase) firmly and keep the water level at the bottom of the bulb.
If you would like to try this at home yourself, go shopping online and check out the possibilities.
Here is that bulb catalog I mentioned and it will be selling them at 25% off until December 15.
Here is another good one, with differences of opinion as to how tall each variety gets. You have to buy a lot to get a discount here but, if they are going to smell better, I might be tempted to try a winter's worth again sometime. I love to have their presence when the New Year's resolutions are starting to fade, but the winter isn't. Even if you don't buy any, go on over and look! Their descriptions of the bulbs are a good education in the varieties available. I'm trying the three shortest varities with a delicate to moderate fragrance this year. Maybe next year I will try some others. Which ones do you like?
