Whether it is the relaxing rhythmic rocking of the car or the unveiling of breathtaking views, there are many reasons why people prefer to take the train, instead of flying or driving.

Vacationers can choose to travel through the Alaskan wilderness or maybe the Blue Ridge Mountains on state-of-the art luxury trains or vintage steam locomotives.

To start with, the largest rail system, Amtrak, offers daily travel anywhere in the United States and locations within Canada. In addition, the railway offers a variety of scenic tours in different parts of the country, including its most popular trip - The Coast Starlight - which travels from Los Angeles to San Francisco to Portland to Seattle along the Pacific Ocean coastline.

Our next stop is the The Great American Station Foundation Whistlestop Tour which is a traveling exhibit train tour that goes to cities through the United States recalling unique stories as it goes from station to station.

Uncommon Journeys is a travel agency which offers train holidays from one coast to the other using traditional and classic streamliners. All of their careful, chosen departures offer distinctive points of interest for today's busy traveler.

Trains Unlimited, Tours has been offering spectacular rail adventures since 1985 through several North and South American countries, including Canada, United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina and Peru.

The Tioga Central Railroad operates excursion, dinner, theater and charter trains on a 34-mile railroad extending north from Wellsboro, Pennsylvania to a location about three miles south of Corning, New York.

South Simcoe Railway's historic, turn-of-the-century steam train operates day excursions between Tottenham and Beeton, Ontario, from May to October. Travelling in restored 1920s passenger cars, you'll journey over the rails of the Hamilton & Northwestern Railway, built over a century ago.

Seminole Gulf Railway owns and operates almost 100 miles of trackage in Florida from a connection with the national rail system at Arcadia to North Naples. In January, 1991, passenger service was initiated with excursion trains and the dinner train.

Scenic Rail Excursions runs tours through Vermont's spectacular Green Mountains on vintage cars from the 1930s offer plenty of photo opportunities.

The famous Santa Fe Railroad offers rides on the 120-year-old spur from Santa Fe to Lamy through the scenic New Mexico countryside.

Lauded by many as "The Most Spectacular Train Trip in the World," the Rockey Mountaineer Railtours is a two-day, all daylight railtour through western Canada featuring the world-renowned Canadian Rockies. The trip retraces the legendary western Canadian routes of the first transcontinental railways as it travels eastbound and westbound between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Jasper or Banff and Calgary, Alberta.

Excellent. The train info is excellent. My mother loves train trips so I like to think up mystery trips to take her on. One was a train trip across Canada and back. It was awesome!
