The traditions of a family are important to the family members. It serves as a source of connection and familiarity that can provide an anchor in the turbulent times we live in. They are the real roots that make us feel secure.
Food is always a tradition that gets passed down, specific recipies every year. My wife always makes a steamed pudding, using a recipe passed down from her grandmother, and packages some up for cousins in other states. Does your family stuff the turkey with corn bread stuffing or white bread? Oysters, perhaps? Is that cranberry relish great grandma's recipe? Or was it something that grandma found in a magazine?
