March 17th heralds Ireland's holy day, so to speak. It is the day when the patron saint of Ireland is honoured, and it is also the date that marks his death.
Since March 17th, 1753, the first official St. Patrick's Day, the date has been celebrated in the U. S. and Canada as well as Ireland. One of the events on this day is a parade - the first parade to commemorate this saint was March 17th, 1762 in New York City. Since then there are parades in many towns and cities in North America. They are usually held on the Sunday before the actual date, which stands to reason - there's more time to go to a parade and get yourself under the affluence of inkahol on the weekend - ha ha!
