-- Elizabeth Bishop

This American poet is best known for poems that examine the world in minute detail. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and grew up in New England and Nova Scotia.

Her first book was North & South, published in 1946. It was later revised and reprinted as North & South - A Cold Spring (1955). She won the Pulitzer for poetry in 1956 for that book. Her Book 'Bishop's Complete Poems (1969)' won the National Book Award in 1970.

Here is a sample of her work (part of a villanelle) from Microsoft Encarta . . .

In "One Art," American poet Elizabeth Bishop varies the French Renaissance villanelle form by estabalishing lines in her opening stanza that will be repeated later in the poem.

The art of losing isn't hard to master; So many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Dr. Lee De Forest - American Inventor (Iowa)

(1873 - 1961)

Now there's a man for ya' . . . this Iowa-born inventor was a pioneer in the development of radio communication. He designed many early wireless transmitters, but most important was a vacuumn tube he called the audion. This is now known as the triode.

And what's that got to do with the price of eggs? Well, the triode was to be a major part of radio, radar, television and computer systems.

This was replaced by the gawd-fearin' transistor in the early 1950s.

Dr. De Forest presented the first live opera broadcast in 1910. In 1923 he was the first to demonstrate sound with movies. He patented more than 300 electronic devices and many in the field of motion pictures.
