Crossing Canada - Part X

After Chris got things in place for the care of the kids, we set out for our little trip over to Vancouver Island. I had friends over there, but I especially wanted to share this with Chris. She had never crossed to the island herself, and it was good to be doing something 'for the first time' together.

We went later in the day. It was dark crossing on the ferry - the skies, were dark, cloudy and ominous - but terribly beautiful. Chris and I spent the whole trip at the bow of the boat, with the wind blowing in our hair.

We sang songs, did Krshna chants, Wiccan chants we remembered from a few years back and even belted out some old Irish songs.

We found the Backpackers Travel Hostel and got a room for us both - 38 bucks - not bad. Then we hoofed it out onto the street to find a late night restaurant.

We found one that served Trinidadian food - they weren't Trinnies themselves - the people, I mean -but the food was Trinidadian - it was good - rice, veggie, beans, etc.

Sorry I can't think of the name of the place - if you know it, drop me a line so I can insert it.

I thought I'd feel out of place in the hostel cause most of the people were young college types, but we weren't there 15 minutes and I was having a good time gassing away with everybody.

That was one darned good sleep, lemme' tell ya'.

In the morning we had breakfast at John's Place a few doors down. We went through a thrift store and I cleaned up in there, gathering gifts. Got three poetry books from a set - one for each of us - Nicky, Dev & Me.

I got a nice bag - a soft tapestry and just worn enough to feel good. I'm still stashing things in that bag.

Then we found our way down to Faziones (not sure of the spelling) where we met Nicky, then Dev.

We took seats out on the patio - the weather was wonderful - just a light breeze. When Nicky walked toward me the Saxaphone player on the street was playing Red Sails in the Sunset.

Nicky had to tell me who she was, but when Dev came along I knew - she looked just like her picture! It was so good to see them!

I'm sure some of you must have had the experience - having known somebody for a dog's age by way of e-mail and forums on the web. When you meet them face to face, it's a thrill.
