Crossing Canada - Part III - On Via Rail

I was on a CanRail Pass. It was off-season and the 30 day pass cost $448.00 (Cdn. Funds), plus applicable taxes. That gave me 30 days to use 12 whole days of travel. This pass would cost $719.00 plus taxes if you buy it during the peak season which is June 1st to October 15th.

Keep in mind that I’m talking Canadian loonage and toonage – not U. S. dollars.

By the way - Toronto to Vancouver seems to be 3 days, but it is not - it is 3 1/2 days, especially when you consider the time changes. The only province that does not change is Saskatchewan. As a result, 4 days are booked off your pass on the way out there, leaving 8 days of travel.

If you are on that train so much as 15 minutes after midnight, then you are docked one whole day from your pass. If, for instance, you are going in to a town and the train is going to arrive there at 12:30 a.m., then it would be wise to get off at the stop before and take a bus the rest of the way in – if you are concerned about using up your days. It makes all the difference if you intend to squeeze as much as you can into the 12 days you are allowed.

Those passes do not include berths, rooms or meals. Whether it is worth it to pay extra, is more or less left to the opinion of the individual. It depends on who you are and what you need.

When I say who you are, I’m talking about what kind of physical shape you’re in – if you have physical difficulties, such as arthritis, back trouble, then you won’t really be comfortable trying to sleep in a seat. It might be wise to get a berth.

If you are young, rather slight in build, then it is easy to curl up on a seat for two (which is what you can take up as long as the train doesn’t fill up). You can sleep on your side, curl yourself up and let your legs rest on the pull-up stool. It doesn’t work too well if you are hefty in body frame.

There are other passes, such as the North American which is $690 on the off-season price.

Here are some of the packages:

I was originally going to go in September, but everything I wanted to do out in B. C. was on fire, so I waited and got the big discount by waiting till the 15th of October.
