10 Gifts to Give Your Donors

1. Give each donor a solution. Emphasize solutions rather than needs or problems and communicate to donors the positive impact their gift will have on society through your programs and services.

2. Give each donor your passion. Your personal investment and commitment will serve as a strong motivator. If you’re merely a technician, you’re in the wrong job.

3. Give each donor a forum. Take time to get to know your donor’s attitudes and preferences. Get inside their feelings to discover what they’re looking for in a relationship with your organization. Donors ant to be sought out. It’s up to you to ask and then to listen.

4. Give each donor information. Empower your donors (as well as staff and volunteers) by providing them with specific facts and figures that support eh case for giving to your cause. Knowledge is power—empower your best resources.

5. Give each donor action. Leadership is doing, not just talk and charisma. Underscore the importance of what they-re doing by working with hem, shoulder to shoulder, in achieving your goals.

6. Give each donor first-class leadership. Involve your donors s volunteers and set them up for success in their work for your organization. More than doing things right, make sure they succeed by doing the right things.

7. Give each donor a strategy. Let your donors know how you intend to use their investment of time/money and the results you are seeking. Use the skills of the business world to show your donors you are planning for the future, not just struggling from year to year to do the same thing over again.

8. Give each donor a challenge. Approach those first who can be counted on to respond to your appeal for a sacrificial, transforming gift. Help them to make their own commitments and then use these role models to influence others to jump on board. The initiators will feel the reward of their own gift and seeing their example multiply.

9. Give each donor good stewardship. Thank your donors over and over again. Use their money as intended and show that your are protecting and managing the investment they have made in your organization. Show your donors that they can believe in you and that you deserve their trust.

10. Give each donor an advocacy role. Inspire your donors to serve as ambassadors for your organization and help them invite others to work with you in getting the task done.
