Some surprising bits of humor among the cynicism make "Starfuckers, Inc." worth a listen. Particularly the inclusion of a lyric from 70's songbird Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." "You probably think this song is about you...don't you...don't you...DON'T YOU?" The rhetorical question begins as a soft query and ends in a roaring, raging, and menacing howl of indictment. Just picture Carly loaded with testosterone and armed with a hatchet and you've pretty much got the feeling of the Reznor version.
Will "The Fragile" be more of the same when released, or will it head in a totally different direction? Reznor's always been full of musical surprises, and the clues that are dropped about songs that have found niches on the double CD have been frustratingly tantalizing. All the fans want is a little bit more of the Reznor magic, whatever form it takes.
