Congressman Gary Condit is coming under ever-increasing pressure to resign his seat, and enduring criticisms of his behaviour following the disappearance of a Washington D.C. intern, Chandra Levy, back in May.
Chandra Ann Levy came from Modesto, CA to Washington D.C. for an internship with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. After a successful time in the nation's capital, she was set to return to her Modesto home on May 1st, emailing her parents with her planned schedule for the coming days. By May 5th, nothing more had been heard from her and a search for this missing person had begun. The case began with a bizarre twist; Levy, 24, left her personal belongings - including wallet, credit cards and driver's licence - at her D.C. apartment. In addition, her luggage for the journey home was found packed, with no sign of a struggle at her Dupont Circle apartment ("http://www.modbee.com/reports/levy/stori..."). From the outset, Levy's mother Susan pleaded with "anybody who has any idea what happened to my daughter, please help us out". Information was slow to reach the police and the news media, with no-one coming forward to say they had seen Levy from May 1st onwards. However, when a link between Levy and California Congressman Gary Condit's was first mentioned, the news agencies suddenly took an interest. Whilst some were quick to point the finger of blame for the intern's disappearance at Condit, others were curious at just how far the relationship between the Congressman and Levy had gone. There were rumours that nothing happened, then that Levy was pregnant with Condit's child, or alternatively that they had dated but nothing sexual occurred. Condit from the outset was adamant that any kind of romance between himself and Levy "totally did not occur", but this was as much information as he seemed willing to give to the police. Condit's denial however was not enough to prevent a search of his apartment, although that failed to turn up any new evidence. Throughout - even to the present day - the official police line has been that Condit is not a suspect, and that this remains simply a missing person case ("http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/art..."). However, Condit and several of his staff members have been interviewed - in Condit's case, four times - in the hope of finding a new lead or possible evidence. Executive Assistant Chief Terrance W. Gainer, part of the investigating team, said of Levy's disappearance that ""Unfortunately...it remains a complete mystery". As if to shed some possible light on the situation, Levy's aunt Linda Zamsky revealed that Condit and her niece indeed had a sexual relationship, albeit one carried out in much secrecy, despite Condit's denials("http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2...").
