The recent tragic passing of Marc Hunter the lead singer of Dragon, made me remember the first and only time I saw the band play back in 1994 at the Mountain Rock Festival near Palmerston North.
The whole Festival was somewhat of a revelation for me, as having been too young to attend festivals such as Sweetwaters back in the early eighties; an event like this was a completely new experience. All the bands that played were legends from the days gone by of Kiwi Rock - Hello Sailor, the Exponents, Dave Dobbyn and other acts were all there, but it is Dragon that I remember the most from that rainy night four years ago. Marc and Todd and the boys played all the hits that night: "April Sun in Cuba," "Are You Old Enough," and, fittingly, "Rain" and for all those present it could only have been a trip down Memory Lane. Sadly, Marc Hunter died of cancer a few weeks ago, aged 44. Some people may remember Marc and Dragon for their decadence, but for many others it will be the music that sticks the most in their minds.
