Bic RungaBic Runga has been one of the most successful artists in the country over the past year or so. Sales of her debut album Drive propelled her to No. 1 on the sales charts for several weeks, and popular hits such as 'Sway', 'Roll Into One' and 'Suddenly Strange' have seen her widely touted as the New Zealand music success story of 1997. Bic continued her winning streak at the recent New Zealand Music Awards, taking out such categories as Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Female Vocalist and Best Songwriter. It is unusual to find that someone as young as Bic, (aged in her early 20's) would produce their own album. But this is just something that makes Bic even more remarkable. This is not to say of course that Bic's music hasn't had help from other musicians at times. One such musician is Tom Bailey (formerly of the Thompson Twins and now resident in New Zealand) who has remixed some of Bic's songs. These mixes are very eastern in flavour and add a totally new dimension to Bic's music. (For more information check out this article at Suite 101.com's 80's Music! Page.) Bic has clearly earned herself a well deserved place in Kiwi Music history, so this week we profile some of the Bic Runga Web Sites that are out there. There is of course, Bic's Official Web Site at Sony Music NZ, her web site at Sony in the States, which features a bio, pictures and other information, and then there are the many well designed fan sites. A particular favourite of mine would have to be Bic Runga's Kitchen, which contains sound files, news, pictures and lyrics. There are also such fan sites as Southern Viking's Bic Runga site, Bic Runga, and The Unofficial Bic Runga Web Site, which even features a nifty video clip. All these sites are worthwhile destinations for her fans. An article on Bic can be found at the site of Real Groove, Xtra has reviews of Drive and Sway and Pop has a Drive tribute. There are plenty of resources out there with Bic facts, so if you're a fan or just plain curious, get surfing!
