On Sunday night, Greg Johnson rounded off what had been a week long series of concerts from top Kiwi acts at the central Auckland bar co-owned by Neil Finn, Tabac.

With his audience crammed into the tiny venue like sardines, Johnson and his band (consisting of bassist Mark Hughes, drummer Wayne Bell and electric guitarist Mark Bell), kicked off with perennial crowd pleaser, "Isabelle," from the 1992 album Everyday Distortions. Continuing to travel on a nostalgic song trip, he then launched into 1994's "Come On" and a few other oldies but goodies before picking up a guitar for songs from last year's Chinese Whispers.

While shifting into the acoustically driven opening chords for "Chinese Rockets," Johnson informed the audience that the role of acoustic guitar player was something he'd have to get used to, as it was position previously filled by the recently departed Trevor Reekie - though he wryly noted that it may take him a few more years to become as wizened as his friend!

Johnson then proceeded to play more songs from Chinese Whispers such as "Liberty" and "My Ship Is Sitting Low," as well as throwing in a few new ones like "Myrtle Grove" (a song which I had first heard performed at November's No Fear Concert). Another seemingly new song was the epic "Matinee," a song Johnson didn't know the words to - as he announced he would have to consult his lyric book.

With Johnson providing such a good night out on what would have otherwise have been another boring Sunday night in front of the box, audiences on his upcoming UK tour in April and May can only be guaranteed a good time. Let Greg Johnson take you high and low on a journey through his music with energised rockers and beautiful torch song piano ballads.
