Ever since their start as the Gordons in the early eighties, Bailterspace have carved out for themselves a reputation as a noisy guitar trio, with their sound mainly based round Alister Parker's trademark sonic dirges.
Starting with the opening assault of 'Two Stars', Parker and band set my stereo alight with a churning guitar riff and the weird outer space imagery that is clearly a recurring theme in this record, with its galaxy cover art and cosmic title. Next up, the band turn poppy, with the anthemic 'Right Now', a song that could be described as pure noise candy. However, it isn't all a noisefest, as a couple of tracks later Parker shows he can write love songs too, with 'Live For You.' While this song is definitely as far removed from a schmaltzy love ballad as you can get, it is certainly a lot mellower than most of the other tracks on the album- that is, of course, mellow in a typical loud Bailterspace fashion! Later, Parker stalks darker territories with 'Windows On the World' and 'Locher', which sounds as though it could be the tortured soundtrack to a strange and twisted dream. 'Tide' is the standout track of the album. Here, the voyage of a ship is likened to a love affair. Parker tells us that "tide comes in and then it goes away...never comes back", in what seems to be his take on a broken relationship. Pretty much, Bailterspace have come up with the goods this time round. My main gripe is the lack of a lyric sheet to follow the mostly indecipherable lyrics.
