Kiwi Rock

In a pop music industry jam packed with all kinds of music genres, many claim that rock music is on the way out, due to the rising popularity of electronic and other forms of music. Whatever rock's detractors maintain, however, rock music is alive and well round the world and the New Zealand music industry is no exception.

With the rock theme in mind then, this week we profile some sites with a focus on out and out Kiwi Rock

Starting with the alternative side of the industry then, take a look at Return to Zero: American Noise, New Zealand Harmony

Featuring New Zealand artists Bailterspace, David Kilgour, the Clean, the Bats, 3Ds and Garageland, Return to Zero is chock-a-block with sorts of info, including discographies, news and tour dates for each of the bands.

Still on the alternative side of things, check out the independent record label list at Unearth.

There is an extensive list of links to interesting small labels such as Crawlspace and CORPUS HERMETICUM. It is interesting to note that the catalogue of this label includes such people as Alastair Galbraith and Peter Jefferies who were stalwarts of important Dunedin label Xpressway.

I also found the listings at Unearth interesting because they included links to Palmerston North label Spotty Dog,the Livids, which evolved from a group at my former highschool!

Of course, the alternative scene in New Zealand is alive and well, but where would a Kiwi Rock fan be without our perennial pub rock favourites? Bands like Hello Sailor and the Exponents are veritable institutions and you're always guaranteed a good time at a summer Exponents tour. See you at the gigs!
