Mike Chunn and APRA

This week at Suite101.com New Zealand Music, we speak to ex-Enzer Mike Chunn once more. However, this time the conversation concerns Mike's role as Director of New Zealand Operations for both APRA (the Australasian Performing Right Association) and AMCOS (Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society).

Mike says that the role of APRA is to collect royalties from agencies that play songwriters' music and this not only includes radio and television, but also any business that plays music in a commercial sense. And once the royalties are collected they are distributed back to the songwriter.

Not only does APRA collect royalties for New Zealand and Australian songwriters, but virtually every other foreign composer whose work is played in these countries.

Mike also says that there is an equivalent of APRA in most countries of the world, and that they in turn collect royalties for Australasian songwriters whose work is played there.
