This week we look at one of my favourite New Zealand bands, the Muttonbirds.
Formed in the early 1990's by ex-Blam Blam Blam and Front Lawn man Don McGlashan, one of the band's early singles was a cover of "Nature," a hit New Zealand song of the '60s written by Wayne Mason. Further New Zealand successes from the band's self-titled debut album arrived in the form of such McGlashan penned hits as "Dominion Road" and "Your Window." In late 1993 a second album titled Salty was recorded. From this record came the no. 1 single "The Heater" and nautical ballad "Anchor Me." A couple of years later, the band were in England making a third record, Envy of Angels, an album which would lead to recognition for the band overseas. In 1998, the band remain in England, performing sell-out concerts to enthusiastic UK fans, with a new album expected soon.
