Radio New Zealand, the government-funded national public radio network, broadcasts National Radio and classical station, Concert FM. And if you tune into National Radio at 1.06 p.m. NZ time on Saturdays, Liz Barry hosts Home Grown with over two hours of Kiwi music. Also, you may be interested to know that currently playing during Home Grown is a series of acoustic concerts featuring leading Kiwi acts such as Head Like A Hole, the Strawpeople and Greg Johnson. Curious to learn more about individual composers? Well, tune into Musical Chairs at 12.33 p.m., also on Saturdays.
In terms of the Student Radio Network, Auckland's 95bFM and Wellington's Radio Active also broadcast on Real Audio, and integrate a wide variety of New Zealand music into their playlists.
However, if you are after commercial radio, tune to More FM in Auckland. More FM play a variety of current chart hits, and Kiwi acts which include Bic Runga, OMC and Neil Finn, can quite often be heard be heard over the airwaves. More FM is also one of the stations which broadcasts the all New Zealand music show, Keeping It Kiwi at 6 p.m., Sundays NZ time.
But, if contemporary rock is more your scene, listen to Channel Z in Wellington, where I have heard Kiwi groups such as the Feelers, Dead Flowers, Shihad and Breathe receiving heavy airplay.
If you are after a youth perspective, check out the lists of stations that broadcast the youth programmes Te Puutake and Rampage.
