A failure it might have been for the allies- but the British navy did manage to evacuate approximately 14,800 men and return them to Egypt.

In the cemetery in Souda Bay where many New Zealanders are buried a pohutakawa tree is blooming- a vivid remember of the South Pacific in the Mediterranean.
