But what was the lesson here? Hard to find one, even among so many tragic and heroic stories. When the fires were out, and the dead buried they bulldozed the almost acre of store, and resolved never to build that high again. Three stories might not seem much, but Christchurch's citizens did not need to be reminded of that terrible November night.

(NB in New Zealand the first floor is called the ground floor. Thus Ballantynes had three storeys, Ground, First and Second)

After reading this article it makes me think of the Grandfather I never knew. My Grandfather died in Ballantynes fire, my father was only 16. I understand that of all the employees that died my Grandf ...
