7. To accept the Youth Movement in Tennis, made evident at the US Open. This is a hard one. It took me until the late 90s to accept the fact that Andre and Pete really could beat Jimmy and John with one hand tied behind their respective hulking backs. Now, it appears as if the guard is changing again (although Sampras did have quite a stirring run before bowing out to prodigy Lleyton Hewitt). It appears as if Hewitt and19-year-old Andy Roddick have supplanted Agassi and Sampras as the marquee match up in men’s tennis. Don’t even get me started on the ladies. The grisly veteran Capriati, 24, is back from ‘retirement’ to battle Martina (Hingis not Navratilova), 21, Serena, 20, and Venus, 21, for the next twenty years or so. Where have you gone Mary Joe Fernandez?
8. To study Derek Jeter’s every move on the baseball diamond This guy is beyond sensational. Jeter's play in the ALDS to throw out Giambi at home, henceforth known as ‘The Assist’, was a brilliant combination of intuition and athleticism, much like San Francisco 49ers receiver Dwight Clark's celebrated Catch at the back of the end zone in the 1982 NFC Championship Game. When a replay of Jeter's acrobatics appeared on a television in the Oakland clubhouse after the game, several A's chortled in disbelief, "What's he even doing there?" Said former A’s outfielder Johnny Damon, "I couldn't believe it. He made a perfect off balance shovel pass on the biggest stage in the world and he made it look routine. Nobody else could have done that. That play saved their season."
9. To make sure Glen Sather has an abundant supply of Mytol So far, so good. Lindros is healthy for the time being but the Rangers’ GM is going to need some help catching ZZZs if/when Lindros finally goes down (Is it just me, or does this guy look as if he’s skating around with a gigantic bull’s-eye on his forehead?). Sather is sitting pretty right now, his team atop the Atlantic Division and his marquee player putting butts in the seats. Still, I stand by my assertion that this is an awful trade for the long-term. While Lindros has played superbly thus far, the Blueshirts are just one crosscheck away from a return to the cellar.
