By quitting 19 games into the season, Van Gundy has opened himself up to criticism that he's walking out on his team. Like his mentor who once faxed in his resignation, Van Gundy will have to wait to see how history judges him. Sometimes ‘Enough is Enough’ is as good a reason for stepping down as any. Enough of traveling far away from the wife and kids. Enough of the endless footage to study. Enough of trying to coax an inspired effort out of players who had too little skill to coast and too much money to work as hard or care as much as their coach did.

Van Gundy, though, is the ultimate gym rat and it’s hard to imagine him away from basketball for long. Perhaps he will give another NBA city (read Portland) a shot. Maybe he will follow the footsteps of his father and teach those who want to learn to play. Remember, Jeff isn’t about loving the limelight; he’s about loving the game. In the meantime, enjoy your free time and catch a little shuteye, Jeff… You deserve it.
