· The World Champion Yankees have gone over 3 million in attendance in each of the last 3 years and have the most lucrative television contract in sports history (whether they renew it with MSG Network or not). The notion that they would just pick up and move to New Jersey is ludicrous and nobody buys it. Mets attendance, coming off their World Series season is also high despite a horrible season. Last year, they too attracted almost 3 million fans.
· The Knicks and Rangers, despite an incredibly boring system and mostly uninspired play still manage to sell out every game at $100 a pop. In places like Pittsburgh and Montreal, when a team threatens to move if a stadium isn’t built the city springs to action… Not so in the Big Apple. "Go ahead, leave…we’ve got like 25 more teams where you came from". Giuliani, waving off grumbling about possible congestion, access to the site, and funding, believes a new stadium on the West Side would also rope in major events (like the Olympics, for instance) and conventions that now elude the city. “You cannot hold conventions in the City of New York of any size” said Giuliani in his State of the City Address. “We lose hundreds of millions of dollars in convention business every year.” It should be an interesting Fall as Giuliani prepares to leave office and several New York area teams prepare to battle law makers, environmentalists, conservationists, neighborhood boards, special interests, politicos, and each other for the right to move into cushy new digs in the heart of New York City. Let the games begin. Go To Page: 1 2
