With a wedding coming up early next year, one of the many things - in a long list of things - I have had to research is accommodations. There will be friends and family coming from literally all over the world and I have to consider budgets, as well as comfort. But fright came over me as I saw high price over high price, and I began to wonder if anyone would even come to this shindig. Even the Double Tree Suites in Jersey City are $259 a night! So I was happy to find that there are a few proprietors left in New York who want to offer affordable rooms for its guests.
The Abingdon Guest House , located in the West Village, is a charming guest house that offers cable television, air-conditioning, private phones and answering machines. This is the kind of place I would feel comfortable letting relatives stay in. Two town houses make up the Abingdon Guest House with nine guestrooms in all. Double rooms with shared bath are $85-115 depending on the season. Even the most expensive room, The Ambassador Room, which sleeps up to 3, is only $175 in the low season. This room features a Grand Bernhard four poster, king-size bed with an additional sleeper love seat. Located on the main floor on the garden side, it has a full private bath en suite, wet bar/ kitchenette and cable TV with VCR. When the average price for a shoebox-sized hotel room in New York costs $250, this is a great deal. Another place to put grandma and grandpa in is the Off Soho Suites Hotel . Considering itself the "Traveler's Alternative to New York's Overpriced, Undersized Hotel Rooms," patrons here have a choice of to two different types of suites. The Economy suite for two features a private bedroom, color TV and air conditioning. The kitchen and bathroom are subject to being shared with an adjacent suite, and only two rooms at one time will be sharing. In low season the room costs $97.50 per night, while it might be $119 in the high season. The deluxe suite for four features a master bedroom for two guests; a separate living room with a full size sofabed that can sleep two additional guests. There is also a private kitchen; fully private marble bath; color TV and air conditioning. In the low season this room is $179 per night, $239 in high season.
