Discount Shopping in New York City

If there is one thing I know better than anything else, it is shopping. And if there is one thing I am better at than anything else, it is finding a bargain. You cannot be born and raised in the Mall State (i.e. New Jersey), and not learn a thing or two about shopping. Which is why, in this particular segment of New York City on a Budget, I am going to list some of my favorite places to find a bargain.
New York is synonymous with many things, but it is especially synonymous with shopping. Paris. Rome. Milan. New York. You can window shop up town at Cartier and Tiffany’s or you can walk in and out the of the street stalls in China Town. You can find an antique armoire just doors away from a place to find a cheap funky outfit for that evening. And, with the warm weather coming up, what is more fun in the city that never sleeps then to go shopping. Everybody is out on the streets drinking iced cappucinos and ogling the windows. Or better yet, summer means more street fairs and flea markets.
Flea Markets
Not many empty parking lots can be found on weekends in New York City, especially in the summertime. That is due to the fact that they are filled with flea markets. Some of them are the finest this city has to offer while others are just makeshift shopping experiences attempting to part you from your money with stuff most likely found on garbage night in Sunnyside, Queens. On Broadway, at West 4th, a narrow flea market is crammed into what is usually a parking lot next to Tower Records. The little lot has been a reliable source for years of knock-off designer clothing, homemade techno tapes, "tobacco" accessories, jewelry and thrift wear.
On a tiny corner lot in Soho, where Spring and Wooster Streets cross, rests another flea market that keeps going all year around. In the winter you can find cold vendors serving up scarves and hats, while in the summer, the racks sport tiny skirts and dresses.
All the way up town, on the Upper West Side, at 410 Columbus Avenue (at W. 76th Street), one local market draws unbelievable crowds — so it might be best to show up early. All kinds of bargains are going on here (along with some prize rip-offs). Goods here span from home furnishings to cosmetics.
