RIGHT WHERE WE ARE

© Rev. Marie Jones

When tragedy strikes our sacred shores, it shatters the deep faith of many people and makes us question how and why a loving God would allow such suffering. As we collectively watch in horror as bodies are recovered, loved ones weep and mourn, and the wreckage of hate and violence is cleared away, we wonder how we can ever regain our trust in our Creator.

Suddenly, the world around us we once looked upon as benign and safe seems dark and sinister. Our daily lives are upended. Nothing seems right anymore. We begin to look suspiciously at our fellow citizens, especially those who are different in race, religion or nationality. Our humanity and humility suffers and is replaced by a protective wall of distance. Love loses ground to fear and clarity gives way to confusion.

But what each one of us must remember is that the ways of God are not our ways, nor are His thoughts our thoughts, and that though we may not understand the deeper meaning behind such tragic events, He does.

If we could but restore our faith in our higher power, whatever our religious background may be, even if it only were faith the size of a mustard seed, we would begin to feel the assurance of God's love and presence in any situation, even the most horrific. We would begin to see the good amidst the terrible. We would recognize small miracles even where all hope seemed lost. We would reconnect with our families, our loved ones, even ourselves as the tragedy served to remind us of what is truly precious.

Faith is holding fast to that which is unseen and untouchable with a deep and steadfast inner knowing that something far greater, far grander, far more intelligent than we are is in control. When we once again begin to live by the motto "In God We Trust," fear is replaced by courage, chaos turns to order, and our hearts are filled with the overwhelming urge to love, to forgive, and to help. When we understand that God is in our midst no matter where we may be, even at Ground Zero, we shall no longer be afraid.

This is when true healing begins.
