Why Didn't I Win the Lottery?

© Rev. Marie Jones

If we have the power to create our own reality with our thoughts and intentions, then why didn't I win the lottery last week? The jackpot was the highest in California history, $140 million. I purchased five tickets, all Quick Picks. I affirmed that I deserve to win this money, and that the abundant Universe was more than happy enough to give it to me. I affirmed God as my Source. I waited, I saw the numbers, I wept.

No, I didn't really weep. In fact when I saw the wonderful older couple who won the big payoff and heard about the charitable things they were planning to do with the money, I was even able to forgive the Universe for choosing someone else over me.

Do you sense the sarcasm there? As a Science of Mind student, we learn that our thoughts have the power to make, or break, our reality. We also learn that God is our unlimited source of prosperity. But even SOM regulars like me often feel frustrated when money doesn't quite fall into our laps, despite our attempts at aligning ourselves with the flow of prosperity in the Universe.

What I realized as I pondered my fate was that when it comes to things like the lottery, there is always a winner. But that doesn't mean that winner will be me, or you, or anyone we know. Not because we aren't "chosen," but simply because of a thing called odds. God doesn't play favorites. Money comes to us in a variety of ways, sometimes even as a surprise, but to think that we "deserve" to win a lottery any more than someone else does is absurd.

The Universe is abundant. There is plenty to go around. If I continue to play the odds of the lottery, I might win. Then again, I might not. Therefore, I also spread my "intentions" around in other ways, in order to attract abundance into my life - through my writing, speaking, good works, etc. We are told that money is God in action, and that the energy we put out into the world comes back to us in the form, sometimes, of financial gain. If I keep putting out as much loving energy as I can, not only will I be successful, but fulfilled as well.

Many lottery winners end up squandering their winnings away because they never took the time to understand a prosperity consciousness from the start. They never learned to look at God as their source, and instead chose to see their winnings as their source. Then, when the winnings diminish, so too does their ability to bring more good into their environment.
