Even though it isn't happening to us, something inside of us resonates, and we suddenly see our own lives in a whole new light. We realize we only have one life, and that it could end at any time.
But it doesn't always have to take a tragedy occurring in another country, or even a blessing in the next neighborhood. Sometimes, it's just a few feet away if you know where to look, like your television set. One of my favorite wake-up calls occurs every time I see that V-8 commercial that asks, "Are you living on all eight cylinders?" Each time, it forces me to ask myself if indeed I am truly living fully, or if I am operating too much on autopilot. I am then forced to examine why I have so much resistance to the present moment, where all guidance actually takes place. This simple question from a simple product pitch always makes me realize that guidance is always there for the taking... when we are awake enough in our lives to pay attention to it. No need for big bangs, supernovas and exploding stars. No need for earthquakes and tornadoes and riots in the streets. Just one simple 30-second promotional spot that asks one simple, yet utterly probing and profound question. Are you living on all eight cylinders? Am I? Imagine that. Guidance from a TV commercial.
