Money Makes the World Go Around...or Does It?

© Rev. Marie Jones

Despite popular opinion, money doesn't make the world go around. It just helps it go around a little faster, and a little more in style. But the way we worship money in our culture you'd think Jesus was a banker, or better yet, a bank. And that God was made of cheap dye on cheaper paper. We sacrifice our peace of mind, our families, our sanity in pursuit of the Almighty Dollar as if it had the power to bring to us the one thing we really want (if we're honest with ourselves, which doesn't happen often), immortality.

Sorry, folks. You can buy a lot of goodies with money, but you can't buy eternal life. Or inner peace. Or total security. Because those are things that come from a foundation based on faith, trust, and an inner knowing that you are already complete and whole and eternal. You can have a few million in the bank and still feel utterly poor, like those pitiful souls you read about who lived in abject poverty all their lives, only to find out after they've died they were sleeping on a mattress filled with moola.

Scarcity complexes hit the have's just as much as the have not's. Security comes from within, from knowing that at any given time, you have the power and ability not just to survive, but to make a joyful living. It comes from knowing that we live in an abundant Universe and that the very same Universe wants, yes, WANTS to give you that abundance, too. Go outside sometime and try to count the blades of grass in a twenty-foot patch. Or count the bees and the birds in the trees, hey, count the trees for that matter. Does this look like a scarce Universe to you? Does God look like a miser? Drive by a field of lusciously colored wild flowers and tell me so.

Our problem is simply a human one. We think, albeit erroneously, that our good comes from outside of us. Including money. But that is just not true. Our good comes to us when we believe in it. When we mentally expect it. When we inwardly envision it. There is no scarcity except that which exists in our own consciousness.

Ever meet someone dirt poor who got such joy out of life it made you feel like shooting yourself in the head with a 38? OK, that's a bit gruesome, but we meet people all the time who live life on full tilt, yet seem to have so little in the way of cash and stocks and mutual funds. What do they know that we don't? That money is just paper. That money just represents an exchange of energy and ideas. That energy and ideas are abundant and eternal and always available. That if they want money, they can get it. Anytime. Anyplace. And usually, by using the talents and gifts they've been given.
