Now, More Than Ever, Choose Joy: The Path That Can Heal the World

© Richard Kent Matthews

Let's start with a Zen saying:

"Almost the entire world is asleep. The few who are awake live in a state of constant amazement."

I don't know who wrote it, but it makes sense. Wrapped in our own cocoon, we do not see the world as it is; we see the world as we are. And the world most of us have created for ourselves is less than stellar. We project our view outward, and behold! A bleak and depressing picture.

The purpose of this article: to help you make happiness and joy the priorities of life. Why? To help change the world for the better. The world does not need another unhappy person. It has more than enough. These simple strategies and tools can start you on your way to a new kind of energy, which you'll take into your personal and professional world. That's how we change things: one new, happy person at a time.

The Three L's

How do we begin the journey to joy? Practice these first:

Learn continually. Learning actually rewires your brain, helps stretch your comfort zone, makes you a true asset and resource. "In time of drastic change, it is the learners who inherit the future." Eric Hoffer

Laugh heartily. Laughter is healing; make the decision to laugh at least ten times a day. Here are some of laughter's benefits: non-fattening(!), increases blood flow and oxygenation, aids digestion and elimination, exercises internal muscles. . .and much more. Oh, did you know that the only two (known so far) bodily functions that bring symmetry to both sides of the brain are laughter and orgasm? Get plenty of both. "A merry heart doeth good like medicine but a broken spirit drieth the bone." Prov. 17:22

Link consciously. Share your unique gifts; see yourself as mission-oriented; remember that giving and receiving are one principle; expect a return. "He who seeks to secure the good of others has already secured his own." Confucius

The kindest and most gracious thing you can do for those you care about is to become a happy, joyous person. "The measure of life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation." Corrie Ten Boom

When people are happy, they tend to kill each other less.

"Life is either a great adventure or nothing." Helen Keller

Is Joy Normal?

The best that can be said about 'normal' is that it's average. We can go beyond average and create a life of adventure without selling the house and moving to a strange, far off land. Here's how to create adventure right where you are:
